Facebook-owned WhatsApp has become a hotbed for spreading misinformation, hate messages and even running organised crime in India. While WhatsApp has surely helped internet users globally to communicate easily, in India, WhatsApp groups have played a key role in spreading misinformation with the intention to incite violence. With WhatsApp claiming to be a complete end-to-end encrypted chatting platform, what very few people know is that WhatsApp collects metadata about every user which the company can share with law enforcement agencies when demanded. While the messages are encrypted, if the police wants then they can get your name, IP address, mobile number, location, mobile network and your mobile handset type. The police can also get to know with whom you are chatting, for how long and at what time. Also, the police can access your contacts as well.
While there are no separate laws for WhatsApp users in the country, the police can arrest you with the support of WhatsApp if you do any of the following under the Information Technology Act, 2000.
